Here is my latest discovery. An album that spins every day to my player the last few weeks. Saltillo* is actually the solo-project of mufti-instrumentalist Menton J. Matthews III, who plays everything in this album (guitar, piano, banjo, cello, viola, violin, bass and drums). “Ganglion” is the first album of Saltillo and is a really experimental album; having as base the trip hop and electronica, the music goes to even classical and chamber modes. What is really remarkable in this album is its instrumentation: drum beats, samples, violin and piano melodies, everything is so perfectly placed in each composition that creating a unique sound. Although “Ganglion” is a demanding listen, it has many memorable melodies that will grab you from the first listen (the banjo melody of “Remember Me?” Is a good example of catchy tune). The album is dark and sometimes it reminds me soundtrack. The guest singers give extra credit to the songs with their unique voices. Highly recommended album!

Since we entered autumn, I decided to continue the tradition of the previous two years and post an atmospheric album. “And Thou Shalt Trust... The Seer” is the debut album of Haggard that was released 15 years ago (1997). I remember that the first time that I listened to this album (it was around 2000) I was quite astonished. The mix of medieval with (death) metal music was quite strange to my ears; I hadn’t heard something like this before. Even Therion and Lacrimosa were quite different from Haggard. However, the result is not “Frankenstein”, but an album that balances between beautiful medieval melodies and death metal riffs. You will hear distorted guitars, bass, and drums along with choirs, violins, cello, flute, oboe, piano as well as other forgotten instruments even at the same song. There is also variety in voices, from soprano and tenor vocals to Asis Nasseri’s death metal growls. Even the structure and the songwriting are quite different from the typical metal songs ; they resemble to classical compositions. Although ” ... The Seer” is rawer than Haggard’s later albums, still remains my favorite from this unique band.

Almost a month has passed since my last post. Well, summer + vacation = I forget all my works and hobbies. To the point now: “A Beautiful End” is the first solo album of J. R. Richards, who is lead singer and songwriter of the alternative rock band named Dishwalla. As the name implies, this is a very beautiful album. The music that it contains is an interesting mixture of pop and rock. Apart from acoustic and electric guitars, piano has a leading role in many songs. Moreover, the violin in the last track gives a more emotional tone to the composition. Well-written melodies and lyrics, melancholic feeling and memorable refrains are some of the characteristic of this album. However, above all, is Richards’ voice that stands out in all of the songs: J.R. has a dynamic range and a unique voice timbre – a flawless voice. If you want a calm and smooth listen or if you are fan of American rock, then give this album a try...

“It`ll All Work out in Boomland” is the debut album of T2 that was released at 1970. The band was consisted of Keith Cross* (guitars, keyboards), Peter Dunton (drums, vocals) and Bernard Jinks (bass). One year ago I presented the solely album of a psychedelic/folk rock band called Neon Pearl, member of which was Peter Dunton. So, similar to Neon Pearl, there is a strong psychedelic element in T2’s music. However, unlike Neon Pearl, there are a lot of heavy-distorted guitars here and the sound sometimes approaches even hard rock. It is difficult to fall this album into a certain musical category. You can find many interesting things here: acoustic guitars that give a folk tone in the songs, keyboards that add a psychedelic atmosphere, hard rock guitar riffs and solos, as well as progressive altitude (many changes within each song and generally long durations – see “Morning” for example). The voice of Peter Dunton fits with the music, although is not something special. The band was disbanded after this album. Nevertheless, during 1990’s they reunited and released other 3 albums, but without reaching the quality of “It`ll All Work out in Boomland”.

*Trivia: Keith Cross was only 17 years old when they recorded this album. He was a quite talented guitarist considering his age.

After almost 2 months and 3 albums I decided to leave my summer mood behind (at least for the moment) and present something different. “Through The Years” is the fourth album of Freedom that was released at 1971 and is also one of few LPs that I have in my collection. Freedom was a blues-flavored hard rock band that was founded in 1967 by former members* of Procol Harum and was active until early 70’s. Although the roots of “Through The Years” are in hard rock, it has many blues influences in most of the songs (especially at guitar solos). Furthermore, folk and pop music in not strange to Freedom, since apart from acoustic guitars, they use very “catchy” vocal harmonies in their songs. Typical example of the “softer” side of Freedom is the ballad “Thanks”, which easily stands out from the rest of the songs. “Through The Years” is a good blues-oriented hard rock album that you should give a chance.

*Trivia: Ray Royer (guitar) and Bobby Harrison (drums) were kicked out from Procol Harum after releasing the hit single "A Whiter Shade of Pale”.

I am still in a summer mood! Damn, what is wrong with me? Anyway, this is the first time I am presenting the same album, but recorded by a different artist! How this can be happened? The answer is pretty easy: this one is a cover album! So, who are these Easy Star All-Stars, who covered all the “OK Computer”, the famous album of Radiohead? Well, they aren’t actually band with the traditional meaning since they don’t have a constant roster on each album (musicians and singers changing even from tour to tour), but we could say that they are like a reggae/dub collective. In “Radiohead”, Easy Star All-Stars successfully transformed “OK Computer” from an excellent alternative album into a cool reggae/dub album. They kept the melodies, but they filled the album with many cool reggae/dub rhythms, which changed the album atmosphere completely. “Radiohead” is one of my last discoveries and it is spinning almost every day in my player. I dare you to listen to both “OK Computer” and “Radiohead” back to back, in order to listen by yourself the amazing work that Easy Star All-Stars done. All in all, “Radiohead” is an exceptional interpretation of the “OK Computer”.

Well, I am in a summer mood again, so, I decided to present another album that is suitable for hot summer nights, when you laying at the beach, beside the blue sea. Let's start with the typical part: Seabear is an indie/folk band from Reykjavik (Iceland) and this is their first full length album. They actually started as one-man project at 2003 and gradually ended up as seven piece band in 2006. Acoustic and electric guitars, piano, violin, harmonica, trumpet, bass and drums are so harmonically combined that creating a relaxed atmosphere capable to transfer your mind far beyond (to a beautiful beach maybe). Both male and female vocals are warm and beautiful, as well as the lyrics of the songs. Their music could be described as a happier version of another great Icelandic band called Rökkurró.
Summer has officially began. So, many of you are already thinking where to spend your holidays. Well, I don't have any particular suggestion about where to go, but, I have a good suggestion about what to listen to whenever you go. Armik is a great flamenco guitar player and besos (= kisses), is his penultimate work that was released in 2010 (the self title song was included on 2010 collection). The album is full of melodies and is really enjoyable. Armik's technique serves the compositions, not the opposite. His playing is full of feeling and emotions. These 12 tracks are able to take away your daily routine. They will transfer you to a beautiful, calm and peaceful place. Fans of Paco De Lucia or Al Di Meola will absolutely love this one.

Winter Rose is mostly known as the former band of Dream Theater's vocalist James Labrie. Unfortunately, this self-titled album is the solely album that they have ever release. Up tempo hard rock, in the vein of 80's glam metal bands, with cool riffs and solos, catchy refrains and beautiful ballads. When I am listening to this album, Skid Row is probably the first band that comes to my mind, but this is not surprising since Sebastian Bach was their singer during their first days (when they called Hope, then changed to Sebastian and finally, after Bach's departure, changed to Winter Rose). Highlights of this album are the very good guitar work of Richard Chycki, who also composed all the tracks, and of course, Labrie's performance, which gave him the opportunity to become member of Dream Theater. Anyway, Winter Rose is a very good album and since we approaching summer, it could cheer you up.

“Half-Truths & Indiscretions” is a completion album that contains the songs from two EPs (“Coral City Ruin” and “And By December You Will Know Where Your Heart Truly Lies”), as well as other unreleased tracks. All songs were composed between 2000 and 2004. After the band’s split-up, most of the members continue to compose music, but with other projects (Eksi Ekso, Thee Electric Bastards, The Living Sea, Blythe Hollow, The Fatal Flaw, The Octave Museum and others). The music of The Burning Paris could be described as post rock with a lot of melodies. The long structures, the layers of guitar and keyboard in each song, plus the use of cello are some of the typical characteristics of their sound. The voice of Nate Shumaker gives the necessary feeling to the songs. Half-Truths & Indiscretions has a dark atmosphere, but is also a quite relaxing album - suitable for night listening...

The guitarist Victor Griffin (Pentagram) started the Place Of Sculls at 2000. The Black Is Never Far is the third studio album of the band. Knowing Griffin's background with Pentagram it is not difficult to guess what kind of music he composed: doom metal, with a lot of megalithic riffs and wah wah solos. There are many "melancholic melodies" in the album, especially in the more acoustic songs (like self-titled for example). Griffin probably had in mind bands like Alice In Chains when he wrote the music, since there are many alternative/grunge influences throughout the album. Even the atmosphere of the album is more hard rock-ish than mournful. Griffin's voice is quite suitable for this kind of music; it gives extra weight to the songs. Overall, the album is brutal and heavy when it needs to be, but it is also melodic and melancholic when it is necessary.

"Έγινε Η Απώλεια Συνήθεια Μας" is the first studio album of Διάφανα Κρίνα that was released in 1996. The band plays some kind of alternative music, but with its own distinctive sound. The album is quite dark and melancholic with very pessimistic lyrics that deal with loss. The marriage of music and lyrics is quite unique. The voice of Thanos Anestopoulos is deep and emotional, in the vein of Nick Cave and Johnny Cash; it gives a dramatic tone to the songs. All lyrics are in reality poems set to music, written mainly by Pantelis Rodostoglou (bass). Unfortunately the band split up at 2009 disappointing all of their fans. I am sure that if you like bands like Madrugada, Midnight Choir or Nick Cave you will appreciate also this album. I hope that the Greek language will not prevent you from listening one of the greatest Greek albums ever.

The driving forces behind The Walkabouts are Chris Eckman and Carla Torgerson - both on guitar and vocals. The band was formed in 1984 and is still active. Their sound is a mixture of punk, rock 'n' roll and folk music. "New West Motel" is their fifth studio album that was released as double LP in 1993. I think that the album is quite suitable for car listening: it has catchy songs, full of folk melodies and beautiful male and female vocals. The atmosphere is quite balanced: there are dark and some kind of melancholic songs, as well as uptempo rock 'n' roll songs that will cheer you up. The band is influenced from great folk/country musicians like Johnny Cash and Neil Young. Tip 1: in the special edition of "New West Motel" there is a cover of Neil Young's "Like A Hurricane". Tip 2: from 1996 and onwards Chris Eckman was the producer of all Midnight Choir albums. To sum up, "New West Motel" is an enjoyable album with interesting instrumentation. Give it a try...

Last Tango is Esperanto's third and also last album that was released in 1975. The album could be categorized as progressive rock, but, it incorporates many different musical styles: some kind of jazz ("In Search Of A Dream"), tango (the self-title is an excellent "rock tango"), soul ("Busy Doing Nothing") and even pop ("Obsession"). The strange with this band is that apart from the typical rock instruments they have two violins and a cello, that give a more dramatic and symphonic tone in their sound. It should be mentioned the excellent cover of Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby" that opens this great album, as well as the epic "Rape", which has a powerful arrangement that follows the lyrical part. Last but not least, the voice of Kim Moore gives extra credit to the songs. Beautiful album...

First of all, Happy New Year to all of you. I hope that you enjoyed yourselves during Christmas vacations. Leaving the holidays behind us, let's talk about music: Unsung Heroine is the album that I was listening to the last few weeks. You may wonder why, but the answer is quite simple: because it is a really beautiful album. Although there are a lot of influences, from Neil Young, till Johnny Cash and Leonard Cohen, the end result has band's personal style. The music could be described as some kind of folk/country or "Americana", but with a rock flavor (similar to Madrugada). The vocals of Paal Flaata are quite deep and emotional, in the vein of Leonard Cohen and Johnny Cash. The instrumentation of the songs is quite good, enhancing their dark and melancholic mood. Take for example the cello on "Snow In Berlin", which gives "extra points" to the song. As the band's name implies you could better listen to this album at night. The only sad thing about Midnight Choir is that they are inactive since 2004.

We will leave 2011 behind us with a quite "relaxing" album. "Music Breaks" is the debut album of J.Viewz. The producer Jonathan Dagan is the mastermind behind this project. Although many different musicians participated in the recordings of this album, the end result is quite homogenous. However, there is a lot of musical variety in the songs: electronic beats, trip-hop altitude, jazz pianos, funky rhythms, lounge - space atmosphere, acoustic guitar riffs and even many more. There numerous ideas and musical "layers" in each song, but, still, the tracks are easy listening. An undeniable highlight on this album is its musical diversity; many different styles are all combined together. Furthermore, Noa has a wonderful voice that raises every song one level higher. Overall, "Music Breaks" is an excellent album without any doubt.

“Exception To The Rule” is the second solo album of this great bluesman and - paraphrasing its title - without any (song) exception is truly enjoyable. Ten tracks that will cheer you up and make you wanna dance. Good rocking blues riffs, lot of inspired solos and nice saxophone melodies are some of the characteristics of this album. Although this is a blues album, there are many soul and R & B influences throughout the songs that make it much more interesting. Apart from guitar technique, Tommy has also a very good, soulful voice, which fits perfect to the music. The band behind him is a top notch, especially the saxophonist Keith Crossan very often shares lead duties with Tommy's guitar, maximizing the "fun vibe" of the album. If you like the blues, check this out.

This album goes my memories back almost a decade. It was around 2000 when I first listened the opening track of this album in a CD completion of a metal magazine. I found quite interesting the mix of doom with power and progressive metal elements. A couple of years later I managed to listen the whole album. My first impression didn't change at all. So, Material Sanctuary is mainly a doom metal album, but its songs have complex structures and long durations. The organ/keyboard sound enhances the whole doom-y/funeral atmosphere of the album. Fredrik Ohlsson's voice is quite unique and sometimes reminds me Geoff Tate's voice. The album could be some kind of crossroad between doom and progressive metal. I am sure that fans of both genres will find it interesting.

Sometimes I wonder why some really good bands didn't manage to make a huge success. Point Blank is a good example. They formed in 1974 and released their self-titled debut in 1976. They are from Texas and, consequently, southern rock flows in their veins. The songs are driven by the excellent dual guitar work of Randy Burns and Kim Davis. Jack O‘Daniel (vocals) gives the proper attitude in every song, while Phillip Petty (bass) and Peter Gruen (drums) keep the rhythm steady. If I could describe the whole album with one phrase, this could be: "hard rock with a southern flavor". If you were to a bar, I am sure that you would love to listen to this album (with plenty of beers of course). The band is still active, having released a studio album in 2009 - 27 years after the previous one! Fans of ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Blackfoot and Molly Hatchet should check the album immediately.

Since I have a lot of time to present a guitar virtuoso, let me introduce you to the world of Frank Gambale, a world that is full of melody, high-level technique and lot of feelings. Having at his back Joe Satriani's touring band, "The Great Explorers" is probably more rock-oriented than his albums with Chick Corea or Vital Information. This is the fifth solo album of Gambale and is entirely instrumental. There is a lot of musical variety in the album, since there are energetic rock compositions, as well as jazzy - fusion stuff. In every song you will find a "catchy" (easy to remember) musical phrase, so I believe that the album can be appreciated even by people who are not familiar with fusion. Undoubtedly, fans of Steve Vai or Joe Satriani will definitely find this album at least interesting.

Two compositions = an hour of music! So, I warn you that this is a demanding album. Program Music I is the second effort of this Japanese artist and by all means is excellent. A lot of different ideas and musical genres are enclosed in these two songs, but they are so perfectly combined that the album flows like water. Piano, strings, acoustic guitar and drums are the main instruments that have been used in this album, while a lot of pads and electronic beats appeared here and there. Furthermore, there are many "melodic" details that will keep your interest throughout the album. The music has a soundtrack feeling and is quite atmospheric and somehow melancholic. There are no vocals here, but I don't think that they are necessary. For those of you who are interested in experimental music this is a highly recommended album!

"Roller" is the second studio album of this amazing progressive band and the first non-soundtrack. The trademark of Goblin's sound is probably the keyboard work of Claudio Simonetti, who dresses the songs with these horror and mysterious sounds. The keys star in every song, while the rest of the instruments give the necessary rhythm. The following albums have been used as soundtracks for horror movies, so it is not surprising the fact that there is a dark atmosphere all over the album. Apart from symphonic rock, there are some jazz influences, as well as many funky rhythms ("Snip-Snap"). Goblin's sound could be described as a mixture of Mike Oldfield and Pink Floyd, so if you like these bands, you could probably enjoy this album.

The 80's was a great decade for thrash metal! Many known bands (Slayer, Metallica, Kreator, Sodom etc.) created masterpieces, but, even less known bands released some pretty good albums, like Hades for example. "Resisting Success" is their debut album and contains an excellent mixture of thrash and U.S. power metal. There is a lot of variety in the songs (acoustic guitars, some heavy "slow" riffs and solos), which implying that this is not a typical "fast played" thrash album. Especially the riffs are sometimes really technical but they don't disturb the energy and the tension that comes out from the album. Of course, I should not forget to mention the great work of Allan Tecchio on vocals. Allan's voice goes really high, but those of you who know him from the great technical/progressive metallers Watchtower, I am sure that you will be familiar with his voice.

It has been a long time since I posted a solo piano album (the last one was Forest). "Viaggi In Aeromobile" (Aircraft Trips) is the debut album of this great Italian pianist. When you will finish the first listen of the album I am sure that you will remember some of its melodies. I personally couldn't get out of my mind the melodies of " Soffia La Notte", "Colori" and "Con Queste Mani". Don't be afraid because there is no technique demonstration in this album. Just simple, beautiful melodies that have been played with a lot of feeling. Every note on the album has a reason to be there. This album was my last discovery and I am really glad that I found it. It kept me company during the nights of the previous month. If you need something relaxing to listen to then try this one. It's really beautiful!
